Did you know that there are 176 different soil types in Jamaica, with each having a unique combination of characteristics such as colour, texture, natural fertility, soil properties etc.
Did you know that the names of the soil types in Jamaica are derived from the area in which they were first found. As the soil survey started in St Mary many of our soils got their names from districts in St Mary. For example, Highgate Clay was first found in the district of Highgate in St. Mary.
Did you know that St. Thomas and St. Elizabeth are the parishes with the greatest variety of soil types
Did you know that the two(2) most popular soil types in Jamaica are: Bonnygate Stony Loam(#77) & St. Ann Clay Loam(#78).
Did you know that there are 101 minor soil types in Jamaica. A minor soil type is considered to be a soil type which has total acreage of less than 1,000 acres across the island.
Did you know that there are 75 major soil types in Jamaica. A major soil type is considered to be a soil type which has total acreage of greater than 1,000 acres across the island.
