ABOUT THE GIS AND MAPPING UNIT (JAMGIS)
The Rural Physical Planning Division currently operates a multi-data Geographic Information System (JAMGIS) which is integrated with the Cartographic Section, hence the GIS and Mapping unit. This allows the Division to produce digital maps and summaries related to different attributes soils, land cover and land use.
JAMGIS utilize two main programs, namely:
- ArcGIS 9.1 (containing ArcMap and ArcInfo)
- Arcview 3.1
- Land Cover/Land Use
- Parish Boundaries
- Roads
- Rivers
- Topographic Map Sheets
- Soils
- Land Parcels
- Coastline
- Elevation/Contours
- Topographic Map Sheets
- Ikonos Photo/Map
- Elevation/Contours
- Agro-Climatic Zone Maps
- Extension areas
These can be manipulated and combined with various datasets to generate information for further decision making.
Successful planning and implementation of projects to promote agricultural sustainability, should proceed from garnering comprehensive information on the most basic and available resource, soil. Rural Physical Planning Division has strategically positioned itself to be the provider of such information.
